Has anyone tried this Kakeibo budgeting method? How did it turn out for you?

K

Kristen O.

I have tried this method. I often fall away from the writing down reflection. I do some reflection, though, mentally.

I have found that using the four categories has helped me tramendously, though, as it reduced my 13+ categories to four which has simplified it enough for me that I no longer dread keeping my finances written.

I think, should I decide to take the time to actually create and reflect that it could be a fun little challenge/game for savings.

Just a note on Japanese budgeting. It is normal in Japan for the husband to turn his pay over to his wife and receive back an allowance. Wives normally control household finances and savings.

I had never heard of this before but I like it for its simplicity. It feels very similar to the 50-30-20 method. Although I never would have thought to group 'culture' as a separate line item; it would fall under wants for me. I always enjoy the physical writing down of a budget. I do it often in addition to keeping an electronic ledger to cross check my numbers.

This is new to me, but definitely worth checking into.

Has it worked for you? What are the pros and cons?

As I prepare my goals for 2022 this will definitely be a process I will consider after researching over the next couple of weeks.

For those of you still interested in learning about Kakeibo, the Frugal Friends Podcast now has an episode on it. Though, I'm pretty sure their pronunciation is wrong. The podcast episode aired Sept. 2, 2022 and is titled: Kakeibo: The Japanese Art of Mindful Budgeting. It goes a bit away from the Kakeibo topic, sometimes, but stays on finance.

Here is a spotify link to the episode: https://open.spotify.com/episode/66f76CIKzzAnyDvrR2qlZe

Frugal Friends Podcast is also on Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, and Stitcher.
