Capacity is a big one. But it really comes down to the individual to be realistic lomg-term about their true expense/income abilities. Companies will extend credit to folks based on "truths" that seem reasonable on paper. But the realities of being able to truly manage income and expenses, particularly when life is ever-changing and unexpected, can be very different. Knowing oneself and one's spending and saving styles is important.

Having a secured credit card will help you build your credit. I use mine just for gas each week and on payday just pay it towards the card.

You can raise your credit score by paying your bills on time and not maxing out your credit cards. At least those are the ways I have found success…

How to get credit score up when you can’t apply for anything because your credit sucks

It also raises your score if you keep the limits down on the credit card. It is smarter to get a new one than to ring up a large credit card bill.

I've been making payments on my dental bill (a little more over the minimum amount) on time, and notice that my credit score has improved.

Your good credit has to out weight your bad credit. I have recently increased my credit score by signing up to Lexington Law and getting a credit card with Credit One, added on another person as a signer to help increase my score and hers. The last three months my credit score has increased by over 60 points and one item has been deleted off my negative credit report. If you have student loans there are forgiveness programs that are paying 80% of your loans. I believe it's called pay as you earn program.
