Don't spend it if you:
A: don't have it
or
B: can't get it.
Very simply, yet we screw this up all the time. Am I right? I admit I do!

I don't think it's as simple as that. Unfortunately, things happen that cause people to spend more than they have, whether they want to or not. Health problems are one example. I spent $14k on medical bills one year, even with insurance. Last week, our water line developed a leak underground. I have no idea how much that's going to cost to fix, but I bet it's going to be expensive. I'm very frugal otherwise, but there are unexpected events that you can't avoid and that can ruin a family's finances through no fault of their own.
I pay off my cards every month. That's my best best method for warding off debt.
yes Linda - if you ever can't pay the credit card in full, you must stop using it until you get it to $0

yup
I try to buy only the items that I can afford to payoff by before the next billing cycle. Of course things happen, but I'm working hard to set aside funds for those unexpected emergenices.
emergency fund is important because life is going to happen
