For the past few years, we have been saving our tax return, rather than splurging and buying things we wanted. If we're all honest, we tend to buy want over need with our tax money, am I right? So, last year, when we had a car break down, we were able to get it fixed with no impact on our monthly budgets, because we had saved our returns on top of our normally weekly/monthly savings. I recommend an emergency fund like that, separate from your normal savings, if possible. It was a life saver for us!
