Hi All!
I wanted to quickly mention my favorite personal finance author, Ramit Sethi. His book, "I Will Teach You to Be Rich" sounds scammy but is actually full of credible, solid advice and systems that help you save money and keep track of your spending. (It's an NYT best seller)
Two big takeaways I personally got: how to save as a freelancer and how to set up a RothIRA. It was tricky to understand savings when income is variable - how to I not keep having to reset my budget and systems? His advice is to save 3 months of expenses in addition to my selected savings rate (50%). The RothIRA was easy - I simply opened a Vanguard RothIRA and set a target date fund. I add to it when my emergency fund is full.
SaverLife has helped me out by giving me encouragement to save when the people in my life did not value saving. It feels kind of silly to check that box each week, but at the same time I feel good about it. I am coming to terms with guilt about having extra money.
Thanks all.
J
