Any advice for budgeting when your hours keep changing and you don't know how much you'll get next paycheck? How do you do it?

This was an old Lifehacker recommendation for self-employed persons with variable incomes:
Calculate the average of your net check per pay period. Deposit all paychecks into a savings account. Each pay period, transfer from savings to checking your average amount. Leave the excess in the savings account to smooth out weeks when you earn less than your average amount. I would continue to track the average amount and adjust my transfer amount every few months at a minimum.
