Several years ago I took a class in my town on finances. I was told that when you check your credit score, your rating goes down even though they are free. Is this true?

No, that's not true. You are only dinged points when legitimate inquiries from companies are made on your credit. Somebody told you wrong.
No, checking your own credit score does not affect it.
Good to know. Thank you
Try upturn
You can check your credit report without damaging your credit for free 3 times a year.
Here is a suggestion on checking your credit report, not credit score, that works well for me:
First visit www.annualcreditreport.com to generate your credit report from Equifax Credit Bureau, TransUnion Credit Bureau or Experian Credit Bureau.
Check three times a year. I suggest checking on these dates:
January 5th and generate report from Equifax.
May 5th and generate report from TransUnion.
September 5th and generate report from Experian.
Repeat…
You can always check your credit score thru your bank & it’s free. But I’ve never heard of it affecting your credit score in a negative way by checking it.
Yes. Through your bank is a great idea.
Agree with Nolan R – I check my credit report each year for free using annualcreditreport.com. I choose, however, to check all 3 at once to ensure accuracy. This way, I'm able to resolve issues quickly when needed.
My bank gives me my credit score.
This is some great advice
Thanks to all.
I try to pull my report for free on http://www.annualcreditreport.com/.
It does not go down when you check your credit.
Most banks let you check your credit scores. Checking it to often, I think can negatively impact you.
I keep track on credit karma
You get so many different scored from 9ne app to another you never know what's real
my credit score is really improving quickly using Seedfi, thank you Seedfi!!!
