Not really. She only told me I should have a savings. The rest I learned here and there.

They were good at saving but not investing.

Unfortunately, generationally, we were never introduced to Investing. Many didn't have enough to survive and invest. Our parents just didn't have that luxury or didn't understand the benefits.

Mine about the importance of it.. but not really how to manage it.

My mother had worked as a company bookkeeper and she had a rule that she paid bills one day a month, no matter when they said they were due. That doesn't work these days! If I tried that, I'd be paying late fees and interest every month.

She taught me to balance a checkbook and a ledger. I also learned those things in school. Every child in my elementary school had a bank account with our own bankbook and we brought in money to class along with our bankbooks every week? month? I probably still have that bankbook somewhere up in the attic. We spent a lot of time studying compound interest and also compound discounting. I still don't understand why we studied the latter and have never used it in my life.

From what I understand, little kids don't learn those things in school anymore.

Wow, That's awesome! May I ask how old you are and where you went to school (city)? Was it a private school? All I remember about money in elementary school is losing my lunch money:) I've mentored 7 yr olds who couldn't identify coins, they can now.

Ann you are absolutely right, they took that element out of school. They taught us how to write checks and how to balance our checkbook, and fill out a withdrawal and deposit slip.

There weren't many outright money lessons, but I absorbed many values and beliefs around money from my family that haven't served me well. My finances were super-tumultuous in my 20s because of that. Now in my 30s I'm finally learning skills about budgeting, saving, and investing.

Not enough! They're both terrible savers

Abigail my mother is not a saver either. If she has she will find some way to spend it. Even if she doesn't need it. My mindset has always been different from hers and she doesn't listen to me.

My mom taught me and my siblings to buy good quality stuff at thrift shops instead of just brand new and still do that now

I had to learn a lot of it myself and with friends post college, because due to the lack of resources we had access to, my parents had a lot of hardships that kind of took precedent over things like investing, etc. But my mom always says, Money is an unlimited resource, and whatever you give away you will get it back. Just a nice mantra to repeat when things get difficult and tight.
