So I've always wondered this but I have never received an answer to this question. I have an 8yr old daughter & just as every other year I've filed my taxes, since she was born, I've always claimed her as my dependent on my 1040 tax form. Just as every other year, I obviously planned on claiming her as my dependent on my taxes this year, but there's a possibility that her father might've claimed her as a child dependant when he filed his taxes this year & unfortunately, he's already e-filed his return… Now, idk this for sure, but if he DID claim her this year, what would happen if I claim her on my taxes as well, obviously without any knowledge of him already claiming her..? Will I simply get rejected immediately when attempting to send my taxes through? Or is there a chance that I will get audited..? Somebody please help me because I don't know what to do and I have no contact with my daughter's father right now. Thanks!

This will be a late response, but your tax return will be rejected since your daughter's father already claimed her. You'll have to mail in your tax return and the IRS will send a letter stating the child have already been claimed. You'll have to send back a letter about the situation.
